THE TRIGGER
An island, a primeval forest, the highest density of monkeys in Africa, no trace of a solo crossing. No trail, no landmarks, no quick rescue.
THE OBSTACLE
I fell into a nest of tropical caterpillars on the second day. My body was covered in over 1,000 bites, and I had to forge a path never before used. On the seventh day, I contracted a bacterial infection that depleted my water supply; the end of the crossing looked complicated.
THE END
Without knowing which animal had bitten me, all I could do was watch for possible infections. Every evening, I had to disinfect the wounds and powder the extremities, otherwise everything risked rotting. Finally, I managed to reach the ocean, and the jungle was behind me.
